He currently serves as a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at the Cambridge Breast Unit, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Alongside his NHS practice, he provides specialist private consultations and surgical care, combining extensive clinical experience with a personalised, patient-centred approach.

Specialist expertise in breast cancer and reconstructive surgery
Professor Stanilov specialises in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of breast conditions, including breast cancer, breast lumps and complex breast disease. His expertise encompasses advanced oncoplastic breast conservation, implant-based breast reconstruction and reconstructive techniques designed to achieve optimal oncological safety while preserving breast appearance and quality of life.

His approach extends beyond treating the disease itself. He understands the physical and emotional impact of breast surgery and works closely with each patient to develop an individualised treatment plan that considers their diagnosis, personal circumstances and long-term wellbeing.

Academic leadership, research and clinical excellence
With a PhD in General Surgery and a Master’s degree in Medical Education, Professor Stanilov combines specialist surgical practice with a strong academic and research background.

He has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific publications in tumour biology, breast cancer research and cancer genetics, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in cancer treatment and surgical practice.

His commitment to educating future generations of doctors and surgeons is reflected in his previous roles as Undergraduate Teaching Lead, OSCE examiner and clinical lecturer at University College London.

His contribution to clinical care has also received professional recognition. In 2017, he received the University College London Hospitals Macmillan Cancer Centre Staff Excellence Award for his work in a one-stop symptomatic breast service. In 2023, he was a finalist in the Health Service Journal Performance Recovery Awards for his contribution to improving breast care services.

Professor Stanilov is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
